Spiral strand ropes for the net roof of the Autostadt in Wolfsburg.

A leaf in a hilly landscape: a 1,600-square-metre roof that touches the ground at just two points.

At the exit of the Autostadt customer centre in Wolfsburg, lightness meets engineering. The double-curved membrane structure is carried by a rope net and realises the vision of a leaf in a hilly landscape. The saddle-shaped roof measures around 55 by 38 metres and is anchored to the ground at just two points. As a result, the 1,600-square-metre, 130-tonne canopy appears to float while remaining stable. FATZER supplied 49 spiral strand ropes with diameters of 20 and 24 mm for the rope net. The canopy opened in August 2013.
