190 Years of Company History
1836
Joachim Fatzer (1819–1885) founded FATZER as a hemp rope manufacturer before he had even reached the age of 17. Professional fishermen and recreational anglers on Lake Constance, farmers, craftsmen, shipping companies, and households quickly became some of the company’s first customers. The product range included clotheslines, packing twine, ship ropes, and custom-made solutions for everyday use.

1850
FATZER quickly recognized changing market demands. The launch of Switzerland’s first steamship marked the beginning of a new era for the company, leading to the production of its first high-performance ropes. In the second half of the 19th century, FATZER began exploring the potential of the new material steel in depth. As steel rope technology advanced, traditional hemp ropes gradually moved into the background.
1913
As demand for steel wire ropes increased rapidly, FATZER expanded its production facilities in 1912. The company soon commissioned its first large stranding machine in a new manufacturing hall. A new benchmark in rope production was established when ropes weighing up to 15 tonnes could be produced. Shortly afterwards it was followed by a 24-bobbin tubular strander.

1952
The rapid expansion of the ropeway industry during the mid-20th century fueled FATZER’s growth and innovation. By anticipating the needs of ropeway operators, the company broadened its range of wire rope solutions and achieved a significant breakthrough with the production of its first full locked coil track rope. Soon afterwards, FATZER set its sights beyond Switzerland and began its journey into international markets.
1975
Growing demand required greater production capacity and expanded facilities. In 1975, FATZER put one of the world’s largest stranding machines into operation. Installed in a purpose-built tower, the vertical stranding machine was capable of 110 tons piece weight, marking another milestone in the company’s development.

1992
Fatzer AG Drahtseilwerk becomes part of BRUGG Ropes AG, a group of 27 companies operating in seven countries and employing around 1500 people.
2009
A new production facility, Plant 2, was built on a greenfield outside the city. From 2012 to 2016, it underwent a third phase of expansion, adding another production and office building. This development included state-of-the-art rope making machinery with an annual production capacity of 15'000 tons. FATZER relocated its operations from the original production facilities.

2020s
Throughout the 2020s, FATZER continues to expand its production capacity, site infrastructure and portfolio of solutions. In 2023, the subsidiary TRUcompany AG is founded, followed by the acquisition of Rocky Mountain Lift Services & Supplies Inc. in 2024. A new logistics hub and a 41-bobbin strander enhance operational capabilities. The decade also sees the development of the first CO₂-reduced stranded rope and the significant expansion of FATZER's service offering.
