Königsstuhl Viewing Platform

Solutions for lightweight structures

Rope-supported viewing platform

Ropes for the 185-metre-long platform suspended above the chalk cliffs.

The Skywalk above the Königsstuhl on the German Baltic coast hovers over Germany’s largest chalk cliff.

The 185-metre elliptical loop walkway is suspended from two suspension ropes attached to a 42-metre guyed mast, which is stabilised by four guy ropes. The path is between 2.5 and 3.5 metres wide and sits above a 118-metre drop. It offers a rare view of the natural landscape while keeping the intervention in this sensitive environment to a minimum, combining a slender, filigree appearance with geotechnical and geological stability.

In addition to the socketed ropes, FATZER’s scope of services covers planning and execution: structural calculations, installation concepts and work sequence plans, as well as installation, lifting and skidding operations. FATZER also supplies 22 clamp sets and the required equipment.

Built on Trust

Natural erosion meant that safe access to the traditional viewing platform could no longer be guaranteed in the long term. Since April 2023, a freely suspended bridge hanging from a 42-metre mast has replaced the former viewpoint, opening up entirely new perspectives on the unique chalk coast. Despite its impressive size, the architecturally demanding structure blends harmoniously into the surrounding landscape of Germany’s smallest national park and, for the first time, offers step-free access for all visitors.
